Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms :: GMOs Genetically Modified Foods

Genetically Modified Organisms Do you concern yourself with the nature of the food you consume? Ever think twice about genetically modified organisms contained in a daily meal? If you're like most people you'll be baffled to know most cheese, Big Macs, and even soup contain bioengineered enzymes which are grown from the seed. In these articles there are two public opinions in which one states the innocence of American judgement and the other describes the protests of Americans against GMOs. Most daily meals contain GMOs while people aren't aware of the modifications. Throughout this paper there are people's ideas and opinions represented on the topic. "Does the US Know What it is Eating" talks about how large amounts of Americans aren’t aware of the contents contained in everyday meals. Soup, for instance, is considered to have contained a certain type of bioengineered enzymes which could be harmful. This all happens to start around six years ago when farmers use to mischievously sneak bovine, a growth hormone, into the cows by injection. This would increase the amount of milk produced by the cows and in turn profits would increase. Likewise, people blamed the government on the lack of regulations on GM foods when in fact Bill Clinton's treasury man stated, "Clinton's administration has allowed hormone-stimulated and GM food to creep on the market"(Steven 1). This confirms the lack of seriousness of regulations among GM products. In relation to the innocence of Americans, this just states that because of the absence of communication between the consumer and the â€Å"label† of that specific product, p eople aren't educated. There is no connection to notify the consumer of the ingredients contained inside. Some of these enzymes could be potentially dangerous. Similarly, "Taking it to the Main Street" discusses how protesters in San Francisco, CA were picketing in front of a grocery store demeaning the store about contents in GM products. Shouting derogatory chants, this was a move to persuade a nationwide campaign to force pre-market safety testing; requiring testing would ensure the protection of all citizens from harmful GMOs. On the other hand, dating back to 1992, the FDA said, "biotech ingredients did not materially alter food and therefore didn't require labeling"(Roosevelt 1).

Procter & Gamble Financial Analysis Essay

What began as a small family-run candle and soap business, grew through innovation, creative marketing and partnerships to become the largest consumer goods company in the world. William Procter, emigrating from England, established himself as a candle maker in Cincinnati, which was a busy center of commerce and industry in the early nineteenth century. And James Gamble, arriving from Ireland, apprenticed himself to a soap maker. The two might never have met had they not married sisters Olivia and Elizabeth Norris, whose father convinced his new sons-in-law to become business partners. As a result, in 1837, a bold new enterprise was born: Procter & Gamble. William Procter was born in 1801 in England. As a boy, he worked as general store apprentice, learning to â€Å"dip candles† – a skill that would later lead to both fame and fortune. His first entrepreneurial venture, however, met with disaster. The day after opening, his dry goods shop in London was robbed, leaving Procter $8,000 in debt – a huge sum in 1832. Determined to rebuild, he and his wife decided to immigrate to the United States. While traveling down the Ohio River, Mrs. Procter became ill and died a few months after their arrival in Cincinnati. Procter first worked in a bank. He then decided to use his past experience as a candle maker to earn extra income and help pay off his debt. He took advantage of the fat and oil by-products from Cincinnati’s large meatpacking industry. Procter began as a one- person operation – manufacturing, selling and delivering candles to his customers in the area. During this time, he also met and proposed to Olivia Norris, the daughter of a prominent candle maker in town, Alexander Norris. Meanwhile, James Gamble was born in 1803, in Ireland. He immigrated with his family to America in 1819 as part of a mass exodus from Northern Ireland. They were headed for Illinois, but during the trip, James Gamble, then 16, became violently ill; his parents took him ashore in Cincinnati. By the time James recovered, the family had decided to stay. At 18, James began an apprenticeship with a local soap maker, then years later, opened his own soap and candle shop with a friend. Before long, Gamble met and married Elizabeth Ann Norris, the second daughter of Alexander Norris. The business began during nationwide panic and depression. But the struggling young firm survived. Cincinnati proved a sound business base because as a meat packing center, it offered plenty of fat and oil for soap and candle making. †¢The Procters’ eldest son, William A. Procter, was the first P&G President in 1890. †¢Son Harley T. was the company’s first Advertising and Sales Manager. He named Ivory Soap. †¢The Gamble’s eldest son, James N. Gamble, invented Ivory Soap and founded the first laboratory in P&G history.

Private Life on Social Networking Sites Essay

Social networking sites can be defined as an online platform where people create their own profiles, share them with the public, and communicate with other users on the Internet. The increasing popularity of these sites affects our lives in many aspects and the most important one is the privacy issue. It can easily be observed that social networking sites are a real threat for the user’s personal privacy. First of all, there are some threats arising from security vulnerability on social networking sites. Generally, users give a lot of personal information to become a member of these sites and it is easy to access this information for hackers and identity thieves. For example identity thieves who could gain very private information such as birth name and date, addresses, phone numbers and relationship status on social networking sites can verify themselves as being the profile owner. Therefore, they can access the users’ credit card number and steal their money easily. Moreover, identity thieves cause not only loss of money but also loss of personal respect and good name. They can use the information to communicate with users’ other friends in order to obtain their information too. Rebecca Sweeny (2011) summarizes that users’ lack of awareness of sharing information helps hackers and identity thieves to steal their money and damage good names. (as cited in Acquisti& Gross, 2006) The second threat arising from security vulnerabilities is marketing companies’ accessibility to users’ information without permission. For instance, spamming the users with unsolicited advertising contents can be annoying in most cases. Furthermore, the companies sometimes obtain personal information and spread them with other companies and individuals in order to make advertisements more effective. Secondly, people share very private information on social networking sites, as Nico Reiher(2009) mentions, â€Å" If the receiver of the information is not trustworthy, the user does not have a chance to track or remove this information back into trustworthy hands.† causes some serious troubles. Firstly, people tend to announce where they are at that moment and what they are doing, therefore, they share real-time location based information on social networking sites. To illustrate, people who share their locations and especially notify others that they are not at home on social networking sites such as Foursquare, provide an opportunity to thieves to rob their houses. In addition, Facebook which is the most popular and preferred social networking sites, also enables people to share that much private information with the â€Å"check-in† application. Secondly, sharing awkward and embarrassing information or political views on social networking sites lead to trouble in people’s social and professional lives. For example, some companies prefer to look to social networking sites in order to get information about prospective employees. According to SNAPR project team, â€Å"Even future employers,†¦, may be able to view your posted information and draw specific conclusion about you as an individual, which could have the negative effects. â€Å" Moreover, disgraceful posts on users’ profile which can be seen also by instructors or bosses will cause loss of reputation in educational or business lives. Those who are not in favor of this opinion seem to believe that social networking sites are safe and information is inaccessible for the public. They think that there are some restrictive privacy settings which allow users to specify who can see their information and profiles. Moreover, there are firewalls which help to prevent users’ information from hackers and identity thieves. Although it may be true to a certain extent, this claim is not strong enough, because these settings are not default without users’ knowledge. Generally, users are not fully informed about privacy issues and share all information without any restriction. In addition, they are unaware of how much information they share to the public. There is not any explanation about the amount of the disseminative information. To sum up, the users’ unawareness of the privacy settings on social networking sites and their insensibility on this issue cause a lot of troubles. In addition, digital information’s easy accessibility and fast spreading also pose a danger for users’ privacy. In order to prevent people from these threats, improving the privacy settings and informing them completely should be the major precautions. References Reiher, N.(2009). Bad School System Essay

What are schools doing for us? If nothing then what can we do to improve them? I think they aren’t doing anything. I have never really thought about this idea until I started research. I think that I am fairly smart, but it is more of after school rather than school itself. I was watching a TED TALK from Ken Robinson and he was talking about how schools kill creativity. He talks about how schools are good at making people who do their jobs successfully. He also says that those same people are doing that job because they don’t have any other choice. By showing this he is trying to show that school kills creativity. Salman Khan the founder of Khan Academy talks about how students don’t get to work on their own pace. Dave Eggers the founder of 826 Valencia talks about how students need 1-1 attention to learn their talents. Ken Robinson has many different videos on school all talking about how school has problems that need to be solved. The one that I watched was â€Å"Ken Robinson says schools kill creativity†. He talks about how school trains you in a way that creates a fear of making mistakes. He says, â€Å"If you’re not prepared to be wrong, then you will never be original†. We are being educated out of creativity. Teachers are not ready to have things be wrong. When grading test or any kind of work there is no such thing as maybe, it is just right or wrong. There are always those kids who are over the top smart and there are those kids that are very creative but not as smart. In this scenario you know that the kid who has the brains is going to get the popularity. Nobody is going to go to the creative kid for help even though he/she might have something worth saying. Then those creative kids will also have to adapt to the school system and eventually lose their creativity. Salman Khan has one very important video on TED and it talks about how students do really get to learn on their own pace in school. The TED TALK is called â€Å"Let’s use video to reinvent education†. In this video he talks about his website www.Khanacademy.com. In this website he has different topics for which he has videos for. He also has sort of an online learning system on the same website. In that learning system they want you to master different concepts that you are having trouble with. So they show you videos on how to do the problem then set you on your own. If you still don’t have perfection then they allow you to repeat. They want you to master the concept by letting you do the whole process as many times as you like. By this you are allowed to learn at your own pace. In school you learn a chapter take a test then move on. Even if you didn’t understand you move on, also the students who get like 90 to 99.9% they still might have some problems that they didn’t understand. I also experienced Khan Academy, I have an account and I am always using it when I need help on something. Dave Eggers has one video on TED and it talks about why students are happier to go to tutoring rather than school itself. In his TED TALK â€Å"Once Upon a School† he shows the audience of a place that he created called 826 Valencia. This is a shop that he founded in which he connected a newspaper editor center, a pirate shop, and a after school tutoring center. He says that students come there running after school to do homework. That’s not really something that you think of. The students get help on any HW especially their English homework. He has his Newspaper crew and volunteers help students 1-1 on HW. He has students write books and then publishes the books. He says that students need 1-1 time with whomever they are working with. In school students don’t really get 1-1 time during school to talk about things that they are having trouble with and stuff like that. In a year he has over 1,400 volunteers helping run 826 Valencia. He thinks that if students are able to have 1-1 time with teachers on their work then they would be more creative. They students would never know if they were doing well or if they needed to improve in certain areas. If you haven’t watched this TED TALK them I recommend every one the watch it. All three of these guys show great ways to improve the School system. These guys are already doing it outside of school, which shows that our School System isn’t really great. There are many problems with our School System we just never think about them as students. You would never think that School would kill your creativity, but when you think about it†¦

Machiavelli The Prince Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Machiavelli The Prince - Essay Example oted to Lorenzo de Medici), so that he might get back his administration posts and start the realization of his political plans.  The writing is worth-considering, therefore the given paper will discuss the relevance  of the Machiavelli’s advice in the modern world.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   The Prince is considered to be unique. It represents a large recommendation the author provides the Prince with. The Prince is given a valuable advice on how to receive new lands in his possession and how to implement the necessary control in these new lands (Machiavelli, 1997). It is clear that this advice can’t be considered as relevant in the modern world, because now we do not solve our problems with the help of wars. Now we have legislation as the main orientation in political decision making. However, for the time, when The Prince was created, it represented a valuable advice: Because how one ought to live is so far removed from how one lives that he who lets go of what is done for that which one ought to do sooner learns ruin than his own preservation: because a man who might want to make a show of goodness in all things necessarily comes to ruin among so many who are not good. Because of this it is necessary for a prince, wanting to maintain himself, to learn how to be able to be not good and to use this and not use it according to necessity. (Machiavelli, 1997) It is clear, that this advice should by no means be used by modern politicians because it can destroy democratic principles, which have been created during many centuries, however the recommendation is practical for the Machiavelli’s time (Machiavelli, 1997). Notwithstanding that the advice of Machiavelli concerning acquiring new lands can’t be used today, his writing The Prince contains many other valuable and relevant advices, which should be remembered by the contemporary rulers: Some people want to rule, others want to be ruled. It is important to remember that some people are ready to work and other are

Comparison of creation of wealth across different asset classes with Dissertation

Comparison of creation of wealth across different asset classes with pakistan stock market kse-100 - Dissertation Example The securities that are traded at stock exchange market are shares, unit trusts, derivatives and bonds. Stock market index on the other hand means the statistical gauge that is used to measure and report changes around the stocks or shares market value. Stock market index track the movement of market differently depending on the averaging method used to come with the index, coverage of index whether broad or narrow and the weight applied which depends on whether it is based on market capitalization or market prices (Puntaier 2010). A nominal rate of return in the stock exchange market represents the investment returns before adjusting for inflation rate during that period. A real rate of return on the hand is the rate of return on the investment after taking into consideration the inflation rate factor during that period. Literature review Pakistan stock exchange market (KSE 100) is the stock market index that tracks the share prices of 100 top listed companies on the Karachi Stock E xchange. The index was first launched in November 1991 with a stand of 1000 points which has generally grown to new heights in the past. The companies with the highest market capitalization are selected in determining the companies that are to be made use of in working out of the index. To make sure that the index is a full representation of the market, each sector of the economy is represented in this computation by the highest capitalized company from that sector which covers over 80% of the total market capitalization. There are 35 sectors of Pakistan economy that are captured in the computation of KSE 100 index which includes, open-end mutual funds, close-end mutual funds, modarabas, leasing companies, investment banks/ investment companies/ security companies, commercial banks, insurance companies, textile weaving industry, textile spinning industry, textile composite sector, woolen sector, jute sector, sugar and allied industry, tobacco sector, power generation and distributio n sector, oil and gas marketing companies sector, oil and gas exploration sector, cement sector, automobile assembly sector, refinery sector, automobile parts and accessories sector, cable and electrical goods sector, technology and communication sector, fertilizer sector, pharmaceuticals sector, chemical sector, paper and board sector, vanaspan and allied industries, transport sector, leather and tanneries sector, food and personal care products sector, glass and ceramics sector, synthetic and rayon sector and miscellaneous sector. The companies are selected from each of the 35 sectors except from the open-end mutual fund sector (McGuigan and Moyer 2012). The largest capitalized companies in each of the 34 sectors makes the first 34 companies on the list while the remaining 66 companies are selected in a descending manner from the highest capitalized to the 66th capitalized company. If a company has being suspended in the last 6 months from trading and or on the defaulters’ counter, it is not included in the composition of the KSE 100 index. The reason behind the establishment of KSE 100 index is to act as a benchmark of comparing the stock price performance over a period of time. Thus, KSE 100 design helps investors to have a sense of how the performance of equity market is in Pakistan. This means that KSE 100 works like other indicators in tracking down the sectors of economy of Pakistan. The index is computed by taking the total market

Child Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Child Law - Essay Example As such, the school is dissatisfied with their parenting, and they are desirous of ascertaining, whether it is an issue pertaining to education or parental care. The UK government is committed to provide free entitlement of childcare to all children in the country. It has provided comprehensive information to parents about their child’s entitlement to free early education and childcare provisions. The Childcare Act requires local authorities to provide information, advice, and assistance to parents, whose offspring are below the age of 20 years (Department for Education, 2012). In addition, they have to ensure that prospective parents are aware of the childcare provision in their areas. Moreover, childcare social work is a function of the public law. This is carried out on behalf of the State and denotes acceptance of the responsibility for supporting the needy children and protecting them from danger, by the State. The functions of local authorities in the area of social work relating to children, are executive functions of the State (Williams, 2008, p. 59). It is very important to realise that social work in a local authority, is to apply proper managerial and social work skills, while carrying out the functions enjoined by statute (Williams, 2008, p. 60). In addition, there are a number of governmental policies that are concerned with the wellbeing of children and families. A majority of these polices provide protection to them irrespective of the financial status or income levels of the families. Family policy is one among a plethora of social policies. It employs a holistic approach to protect children (Kamerman, 2009, p. 115). The government has to provide protection to individuals who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. The Children Act 1989 and the Children Act 2004, provide the statutory system for the fundamental protection of children in England and Wales. The local authorities are placed under a duty, by the Children act 1989, to
